Dr. Morgan Wyatt

Location: Toronto, ON

Award: Innovation Award

Category: Environment

Year: 2018

Since 2014, Greenlids have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by almost 2.5 million tonnes of CO2.

As the collection of organic waste was gaining popularity across North America in 2014, Dr. Morgan Wyatt noticed that the very mechanism for collecting food waste in the kitchen was flawed. Paper bags can be difficult to use and, once wet, lose their integrity quickly. Compostable bag liners often leak, tear, and smell unpleasant, and can take months to decompose fully. “There must be a better way,” he thought.

With a PhD in chemical biology and a vision of empowering consumers to make eco-conscious decisions, Dr. Wyatt began working on a better solution. He aimed to develop a water-resistant, paper-based container that could eliminate the messy, smelly compost bin and the need for compostable bags in one single product. Greenlid was born.

After extensive research, Dr. Wyatt developed a bio-based proprietary formulation that created, in essence, fatty acid layers around the paper pulp bin. This leak-proof technology became the world’s first fully compostable compost bin, made in Canada from 100% end-of-life recycled cardboard.

Since 2014, over 3 million Greenlids have sold across the U.S. and Canada, and millions of people using them have reduced their carbon footprint by diverting waste from landfills and reducing greenhouse gases. With a strong foundation in North America, shipments have also expanded to include Europe and Australia.

In an effort to further eliminate plastics with a paper-based alternative, Dr. Wyatt’s technology and approach are being used for other applications. Notably – Biotraps – biodegradable mosquito traps were developed and are currently being used in low and middle-income countries around the world to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses.
